DIY Highlighter Stick & Spring Spark Pressed Micas

DIY Highlighter Stick

Spring Spark is a perfect description of how I feel this time of year. Wisconsin has long, cold, icy, snowy, gray winters but lately we have had warm stretches that remind me how great the sun feels on my face (and I get to see the dog smile through long neighborhood walks.) I always look forward to summer and seeing green grass, iridescent hummingbirds, flowers & gardens, and anything colorful that I don’t see in the winter months. To celebrate Spring’s arrival, I created a small set of colorful pressed micas and made my first attempt at a highlighter stick.

I used the TKB Trading mica powders, base powder, preservative, binder, 26 mm tin pans, mini spoon-5 and tamping tool for the micas. They can be pressed with or without isopropyl alcohol. As with all DIY cosmetics, please be sure that you are not allergic to any of the ingredients used before trying.

I first worked with a balm-sized highlighter stick recipe to see what would happen. Mica powder disperses in the oils of a balm formula and becomes much more sheer than in a pressed version. Base powders were included to boost the color formula. I tried MyMix Press Base & Matte Texture Base. The recipes with Matte Texture Base had increased opacity due to the Titanium Dioxide. The Matte Texture Base needs a little more time stirring because the powder did not want to incorporate into the liquid base as easily as the MyMix Press Base. This was all an experiment and both powders worked.

The stick highlighters are more on the sheer side when applied. I added a decent amount of sparkle but the recipe could be changed to reduce or increase the glitter. I used the TKB Trading Star Bite Collection for the highlighter sticks–the size of the sparkly particles can be too large/irritating to the eyes. The highlighters apply smoothly & have a comfortable, moisturizing feel on the skin. I prefer to dab the highlighter onto my finger tips to apply it. Swiping the large stick across my cheek can pull up a bit of foundation underneath. The sticks make an amazing base for your favorite powder highlighter and are also beautiful on a bare face/skin.

I bought my large containers ( “Empty Clear Plastic Deodorant Containers, 2.2 oz Cylinders” from Ozone Layer Deodorant 5 for $9.95) through Amazon. They seemed like the right shape & don’t look like deodorant sticks. My idea was to combine my basic lip balm recipe with a bright mica color formula. The lip balm stays firm but melts into the skin nicely. These highlighter sticks are much larger than the lip balm containers and a much larger amount of the ingredients are used.

Kaleidoscope Highlighter

  • 2 tsp Extra Bright
  • 1 tsp Shanira Sun
  • 1 tsp Diamond Cluster
  • 1/2 tsp Metallic White
  • 1 tsp Travel to Venus

How to make a highlighter stick:

  1. Place a double boiler on the stove top over low heat & begin by melting the beeswax
  2. Add the mango butter, oils, and preservative cap-5 and mix until combined thoroughly (I use a craft stick or silicone spatula)
  3. Add the powders & combine thoroughly
  4. Use a pipette to transfer the liquid mixture to containers (or pour carefully–it is easiest leave spills until they harden)
  5. Let the sticks set up & harden completely (I leave mine alone 24 hours)
  6. Wipe the remaining mixture from the double boiler (re-heat if necessary.) Do not pour beeswax down your drain.

I am loving the new pressed micas & have been wearing them a lot. I also really like the feel, application & fun of the stick highlighters. The highlighters can be used on the face or body & you can alter the formula to include less or more sparkle & color. The highlighter sticks have a moderate amount of sparkle and I used quite a bit of mica powder to create them. The tricky part with formulating the sticks is that a lot of colored mica is used and the liquid looks iridescent, holographic, and over the top metallic & bright, but they have a more sheer application once they are solid. I definitely see possibilities for the highlighter sticks in the summer! They would look gorgeous on arms & legs for summer parties.
